I have a yellow lab and last week, a kitten showed up at my house. I guess it was lost. Well, the other day, I was watching my lab and the kitten playing outside. The lab layed down and the kitten began to nurse from her. Today, we were outside with my four year old playing and I picked up the kitten. My lab immediately comes over and jumps in my lap to lick and smell the kitten to check on it. After I put the kitten down, the lab was checking the kitten all over. I often see the kitten and the lab asleep together. Is this normal? I think it's sweet. I was just curious. Thanks.

Yes this is fine your lab wont get hurt but I'm not sure it kittens

can nurse from dog milk but the reason why your lab was doing

this was not only because labs are known for their kind nature

your dog was probably in heat because when dogs are in heat

they can suffer from a type of sickness not relay a sickness but

like if your dog do sent have puppies and wants puppies it will get

a toy or a ball or something and treat it like it has puppies maybe

it treated the kitten like it was its puppy but o well I'm not sure

but don't worry it you still are worried you should ask a vet.

Nursing is a bit odd

My cocker spaniel I had growing up pretty much adopted both of the kittens I brought home. The cats cried for days when she passed away.

it is completly common i have a black lab that did the same
she is 8 years old and never had puppies in her life but when we got bella my kitten she began to nurse the kitten it is not ood but needless to say completly normal nothing to worry about once in a blue moon just check your dogs nipples because if your kitten try to get milkand the dog is not nursing then it may lead to infection but if the dog is not in discomfort then do not worry it is nothing to worry about it is cute

Labs are wonderful dogs. I believe they would protect anyone and anything. Just chalk it up to the fact that you have a very good dog. But yes, it is an anomaly.

I couldn't believe it when my mixed dog took up taking care of the neighbor's kittens. I had five of them in my yard last summer. She weighs about 22 lbs. and it was funny. Then there was the bird this summer...Some animals know when to nurture...

Yes it is fine. When my buddy's dog had her pups she wouldn't take care of two of them, I just happen to have a cat that was nursing and she nursed them. The little one died :( but there other made it. I have him now. After the cat was done nursing I fed him from a little bottle. He is 6 now, but has cancer so he won't be with me much longer. :( :(

the dog is still a mother and it is nature not rare but not common it happens with other pets as well but if the dog don't hurt the kitten then you should be fine

It was nursing it? O.o That's odd.

When I had baby rabbits in my house, my Australian Shepherd would gently pick them up and lick them off. And she'd whine when I made her leave. : P
