You use the HOV lane, and you're the only one in the vehicle?

Well, what exactly is the point of these lanes? To encourage people to carpool and help prevent pollution and smog?

you get a ticket if you are caught. it's a pretty large one ($150 or so in my state). if another driver reports you, on your first offense, you only get an anonymous pamphlet in the mail about rules of the HOV lane. the second offense you'll get a letter stating where and when you were witnessed. you cannot get a ticket if you are not caught by proper law enforcement...of course this varies state to state.

i live in washington state and i have called our carpool violator hotline: 206.764.HERO
