does anyone know of any good shipping companies for the car ? as i dont really fancy the ferry and then drive through spain.

i am going to live there so hiring a car is not an option !

There are no cheap ways of shipping a car overseas that I am aware of (it's not as easy as importing cars from Japan, for example!). Your best bet IS to get a ferry to Santander or Bilbao and drive down. I have done it several times, although not since the 80s, and it's quite a nice drive - the roads are much quieter than the roads here, and you can always find somewhere to stay overnight if you need to.
Obviously, the ferry fares are cheaper if you go to Northern France, but it's further to drive and you use more diesel (you're not taking a petrol car to Portugal, are you?!)

There really is no cheap way. We have bought an apartment in Olhos d Agua, and we actually bought a car there. Is there a reason you don't want to drive through Spain, the roads are great. I suppose could try the freight company's to take the car and you fly.

If you are coming to Portugal now ( Low season ) come by plane ( low cost companies are making flights from 75 Euros ). than Rent-a-car a 7 days rent for a small car all inclusive is 115,00 Euros ( This prices are from November to February ). Make the reservation before you arrive check for exemple www.holidayscar.com ( sorry the publicity is my company...lol ) but check the internet theres lot of car rental companies. If you try to rent when you arrive you will pay much more... Enjoy Portugal is a fantastic contry with a lot to see and in the summer we have a fantastic weather...
