I have a uti and I had to pee in a cup for him. He said he saw bacteria and white blood cells in the sample. He asked about any family w/diabetes, (mom and grandmother), and now he wants to test me. Something about fasting for 3 hours and taking blood each hour.

Could the white blood cells or bacteria, plus my family line, be an indicator?

Urine samples are "dipsticked" for glucose, proteins, and ketones. IF these are present the patient has a problem that needs to be addressed. This is a screening tool and not sensitive enough for monitoring. Either a fasting glucose test (an 8 hour fast) or an oral glucose tolerance test may be used to diabetes and pre-diabetes. But the tests should be done at two different times to confirm the diagnosis. The OGTT they recommend involves a fasting glucose, followed by the patient drinking a standard amount of glucose solution to challenge their system followed by another glucose test two hours later. Of course the patient must monitor their own blood glucose level at home.

When your doctor checked your urine there must have been some indication of diabetes. Urine sample used to be used to check for sugar but this method is impresis and has been replaced by testing blood. The test your doctor wants to do is a fasting blood sugar to see if there is any evidence of diabetes.
An infection will tend to cause an increase in blood sugar especially in a diabetic. Diabetes does run in family and type II diabetes relates to being overweight and not getting enough exercise.

The modern test for diabetes is a blood-sugar test.

A prick in the finger will give the blood-sugar reading at that time, but a proper blood sample can determine the blood-sugar levels over a period of time. Blood samples are usually taken in the morning before taking food, because the blood-sugar level increases as the period since the last food intake lengthens.

Urine can be tested for sugar levels, but diabetics give urine samples mainly to detect kidney disorders (as these are a common consequence of diabetes.) Again, urine samples are taken in the morning, before food intake, thus ensuring the maximum concentration of chemicals in the urine.

There is some evidence to support the theory that diabetes is hereditary, hence his questions.

Take the test. On average, diabetes remains undetected for seven years and is often only discovered when there is potential organ failure

Yes, a high level of glucose (sugar in the urine) is an indicator of diabetes. Diabetes tends to be genetic. A fasting blood sugar should run between 60-100. Levels higher than that indicate diabetes.

He ran a urinalysis. I probably showed a high glucose level. When you start spilling glucose into the urine it can be a sign of diabetes.
