It was Benjamin Franklin, but unfortunately he has been seriously mis-quoted. If you read the entire quotation in it's proper context, you will see that the current US security situation is not an apt application of the quote.

Here's the actual quote:

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."

The threat of Islamo-fascism is enormous. It pits the free world against those that seek to impose a fanatical religious government on all of us and kill all the "non-believers." Make no mistake: this threat is real. If you don't follow Islam, the radicals want you dead.

Seen in that light, our current efforts to defeat this threat through the use of electronic surveillance, data mining, etc. are essential. We are not seeking "a little security" but the survival of our nation and our way of life. Throughout our history, this nation has taken special security measures during time of war to ensure victory. I believe Franklin would agree that this is one of those times.
