Definitely get the self cleaning litter box!! I LOVE it!! It scoops the mess into an enclosed container, so there is no smell! And you don't have to clean it every day!! Best $100 I have ever spent!

The noise does freak the cat out a little at first, it waits about 10 minutes after the cat leaves the box and then activates and my cat and dog would run back to investigate the sound for the first week or after we got it. Now they don't even notice it.

If you have one cat, Tidy Cats might work.

However, I have found that the best one for one or more is Scoop Away. It makes harder clumps that are easier to clean out.

One of those automatic litter boxes are great, if you can afford to spend $90 on one. I got lucky and had one given to me. Worked wonders until we had a power surge and then it quit. I have a plain litter box now with 2 cats, and no odor.

Be sure to clean the box daily. And you could even put a little Arm & Hammer baking soda in it if you like to help with the odor. I've done that when one of my babies was sick. But not normally.

I use potting soil, my vet recommended when we found out that the cat was allergic to the cat litters. The potting soil helps break down the odor. I clean it out once a day and can never smell anything. Plus you have instant fertilization for your yard too!

I have 14 cats and have tried all the litters available in the department and grocery stores, The one I found most effective for odors is "Feline Pine".

Like a lot of people have suggested, Tidy Cats Multiple Cats works wonders--it has a citrus smell to help cover the smell of waste. Yes, you do have to clean the box every day, and I recommend emptying the thing completely and rinsing it out in the tub once every two-three weeks. We have no problems with three cats in one box.

Scoop Away Multi Cat. This stuff stays fresh longer than any I've used.
