I'm an atheist and I have taken the time to look at and learn the teachings of most religions, before deciding that I am an atheist. I just find the whole idea of God preposterous because every religion has stolen from every other religion. For example, Christianity took many of the old pagan stories and copied them to end up with Jesus and the like. This copying was obviously done by humans who then claimed it was the "word of God". Pretty much every religion has stolen from another religion or three, so why should I believe one religion over the other, when they were all fabricated by a bunch of humans? For me personally, the whole creationism thing just simplifies the concept of creation down way too much, and even if one were to say that god created evolution you would clearly be grasping at straws, because evolution happens over millions and billions of years, where the bible states that the earth can only be a couple of thousand years old. When you really take a step back and examine the whole concept of religion, what you end up with is a bunch of fairytales for adults so that they have an excuse to stick their head in the sand and say "God did it". The whole notion of a supreme being, whether he shoots lightning from his fingers or whether he is the "the swagger, the glimmer in his eye ... and times that by infinity!" of an actors eye (doubtful), just makes no sense. The fact that we are discovering new things every day and pushing the boundaries of what we know, that should really be what we believe in. Not these stories designed by humans thousands of years ago to control the masses.
