what to do about an orphan kitten 4 weeks old who has diareha

There is a product called Petpectolin. They have it at the pet food store where I buy my cat food. Follow the directions and the diarrhea will stop, if it is simply a dietary thingie.

Also, at four weeks, the kitten should be able to eat on its own. You will still need to provide the formula (available at most pet food stores) and DO NOT GIVE IT MILK. Milk causes terrible diarrhea in cats. Contrary to myth, while cats will drink milk, their bodies can't process it correctly.

The next thing is do not give it canned food. You need to try to dry up the extra fluid and canned food has a lot of moisture. Royal Canin makes a baby cat formula for kittens up to four months. Moisten that with some formula, so that it is soft, and don't feed that kitten anything but the baby cat dry food and formula. Also set out a dish of water. You will want to wean the kitten away from formula and onto water over the next couple of weeks. You should see a difference in a day or two. If you don't see a difference, or the kitten isn't active, it is emergency vet time.

A change in diet is enough to trigger diarrhea in an adult cat. A baby kitten going from mother's milk to food can be expected to have a problem. By the way, thanks for saving it.

Call the Humane Society. They need to have some formula that is like their Mother's milk and they probably have bad cases of worms and parasites. You need to do something quickly if they have diarrhea because they are so fragile they may pass away quickly. Call a vet and ask what to do, most Vets will talk to you.

I'm not being rude but you posted this before and got 13 responses. So why are you posting it again? The kitty needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.

buy kitten fomulae. kittens are lactose- intolerent and, like some humans, have diarrhoea upon drinking milk that contain too much lactose. if they are too young to drink from a saucer, feed it with a milk bottle.

Consult your vet ASAP. Diarreha can dehydrate a kitten that young, and ultimately kill it. Your vet will know what to check for.
