Our 14 year old son constantly ignores his fingernails. They grow long, but he doesn't seem to care. When we mention it to him, he just blows it off. Any ideas about how to get him to cut his nails? Should we just do it for him, or hand him clippers and stand over him until he does it, or just forget about it and let him look like a slob? How would you handle it? what would you say?

Stand over him until he cuts his nails. Tell him when he's on his own he can be a slob but until then, he will follow the house rules.

If you stand over him unitl he does it, it will give him a new avenue to resent you. He is a teenager, give him a break. Before too long girls will enter into the picture, and he will do the duty so as not to weird the girls out. Do not provoke or goad him to do this. He will trim them when he is ready. It is usually a member of the opposite sex that will convince him to be more aware of his appearance.

I wouldn't do it for him - he'll hate that. Good old bribery will probably work, buy him a CD or something if he keeps them trimmed. Tell him about all the germs that fester under his nails and how girls don't like that, maybe that will have some effect.
Hey at least he doesn't bite them!

I would say, as long as he's not hurting anybody, and he showers on a regular basis, let him do what he wants. He's at an age where he needs to decide what he wants to look like. I went through my black period. I was 13-14. I wore nothing but black clothes and black eyeliner. Lots of makeup and big hair. My parents probably thought I looked like a circus freak, but they let me do it and I grew out of it eventually.
Leave him alone, he doesn't need you to cut his nails. He'll cut them when they bother him.

No, imposition is not a good way to handle things. Communication is the key and you should talk to him and teach him why hygiene to all teenagers is important and give examples.

My eighteen year old step son does not bathe...he stinks! Should I shove him in the sewer where the rats would welcome his comforting stench... I think so! It will take the girl of his dreams to make him change his ways. no-one else is good enough. Live and ignore.

Well since it's about time to have the sex talk with him, have his dad incorporate appearance & cleanliness. Boys his age usually start of their sexual experience with masturbating themselves and girls. If his nails are too long he's gonna cause damage to himself and her. Sorry if you weren't ready for that but its the truth.
