My extended family (i.e. grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles...) has always been Christian and very religious, however my immediate family (i.e. mom and dad) while believed in the Christian God they did not go to church practice their faith (my father was an alcoholic and my mother I guess just didn't care). About a year ago my mom (my dad died when I was 14 so it is just me and her) started to going to church and having more faith in God and I think that its wonderful. But what I'm getting at is why do allot of Christians (the ones I have met any ways) feel its not okay to listen to music that isn't glorifying God but it is okay to watch television shows that isn't glorifying God? What is the difference? When ever I am at my mamaws house she will not let us listen to music that isn't about God, and my mom is now trying to get me to stop listening to my favorite music (i.e. The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, The Who....) Isn't this a bit hypocritical? Please, no rude remarks about Christians..I am one myself. Thanks for your opinions!

I will not comment on hypocritical but I think it is dumb. What, is Tom Petty going to send you to hell too? Stand up for yourself and don't be railroaded.

I'm a Christian and I understand where you're coming from. I can only speak for myself. I have a 15 & a 12 year old.
I don't want to listen to music that has very bad lyrics and a lot of music nowadays does. I think music sinks into your soul and you "memorize" things easier when it's set to music. Do you remember the "alphabet song?" We also had a song to remember the months of the year and Declaration of Independence. I don't want horrible lyrics going through their head.

On the other hand, I grew up with the rolling stones, etc, and didn't even know what half the stuff meant until I was an adult! My son listens to his walkman about half an hour an evening. I don't agree with it when kids are "plugged" into their music all the time because it takes away socialization, etc.

Now....I must admit....I listen to Christian music 99% of the time and I like to watch Desperate Housewives. Of course when I watch TV, I want to see some moral themes, etc. I can't justify watching it. It's something I'm working on. All I can say is that if the show starts affecting my thinking, then I'd have to stop watching it. If I start thinking about it or thinking about sex or whatever or if it's causing discontent, I'll stop watching it.

I will say that I won't ever watch shows where people are talking to the dead, etc. I don't watch Oprah very much because she gives a moral relativism message. So....
Maybe your mom is working on giving up her bad TV shows? When we become Christians, we don't automatically give up everything bad. God has had to work one bad habit out at a time.

I'm going to advise you to respect your mom's wishes when you are in her house. It's a good way to show her your love. She probably sacrifices alot of other things for you, that you don't even realize.

You really sound like a good kid.

since you are a Christian you already know that God would have us to guard our hearts and our minds...it is not good to watch or listen to things that are ungodly..however everyone has their own convictions, so we should not lecture them on it, but allow God to give them conviction is his own time. I am not sure where in the bible and I can't think of the right words to use as a search but we are told just that..we should concern ourselves of our own convictions and let the Lord deal with other Christians as he sees fit. He after all is their Lord and will deal with them. I have a suggestion for you, it is just a suggestion..maybe you can listen to some Rock Christian music..Audio Adrenaline, Pillar, Skillet etc... they have a lot of good Christian music that jams. Also just from my point of view if the lyrics are not foul..or satanic (Antichrist) like Tool Black Sabbath etc...there is no harm in them. Listen away until God tells you otherwise...I found the scripture I was talking about you can find it in Romans 14:4 actually the whole chapter but mostly 4 because it is there we see that all people will give account for themselves and we should not judge our brothers..Hope this helps

People just pick and choose what parts of their religion they want to follow these days.
Whether they believe that one thing is more "evil" than the other or whether it is simply out of convenience.. or to put on a show..

Why don't you ask them? Ask your Mom. They're the only one's who know. It is hypocritical, yes.

I think the point is that these people who don't follow it think that just believing in God (some don't, but some genuinely do) is enough to call yourself a Christian or whatever. So they go around telling everyone that they are a Christian, but don't care enough to commit and do it properly. It doesn't make sense yeah.

Anyone named Led Zep babe is going to do OK.

I'm not saying this is right, but the reason why many people pay more attention to music than TV because the drug/sex/rock-n-roll lifestyles are more well known for musicians than for TV actors. Plus, most of these musicians are directly involved in the content of their music, so the "unsavory" lifestyles may be reflected in their lyrics.

In the case of the Stones, Zepplin, and the Who, they have performed music that would not fit your mom's newly found Christian values. (Sorry, I don't listen to alot of Tom Petty). And since their contemporaries of your Mom, she knows that.

So you should ask what particularly bothers her about this music. If she's open to compromise, suggest discussing the lyrics of each questionable song so she feels like she has equal time. Most lyrics are available on the intranet. Or, you might agree to listen to so many hours of "her music" in exchange for so many (more) hours of your music. I'm thinking 1 hour of hers for every four of yours, but it would be negotiated.

Watch the volume and the songs with outright offensive words, and you should be able to work something out.

You think she'd consider Zep's "Houses of the Holy" album God music?!?

When I became a Christian my music and tv styles changed quite a bit...I just wasn't interested in the same garbage I used to watch. As a result, I became pickier about what my children watched and listened to.....Not to say all secular music is bad, I still listen to it, but only the "easy listening" sappy love song stations....LOL

Although we as Christians are called to be Christ-like, we often fail. We're not perfect, just forgiven. I have found though that often I learn and grow because of my failings. Thank God that He is a forgiving God, because I mess up all the time.

It is hypocritical of the followers to became so rapped up in their faith. It could be why the christian faith is not attracting more followers, just a thought.

The Bible says when we get saved we are to be a seperate people. The things you listen to have lyrics that are not godly. When we are christains this means we are Christ like. And as far as the T.V. we should turn it off if it is something that isn't appropriate. You really need to pray and God to give you guidence. He is the one you need to please the most. You should obey your mother which is God'a commandment. I think she just wants you to get closer to him and let the world see Jesus in you.

no one is perfect you can not tune out the world this is a wicked world we live in when you go out side do you close your eyes and plug your ears you cant live that way there are evil things all around us don't let these things take control of your life we are in the world not of it if we were to look for things in this world that are perfect we would never find them the only perfect thing is the love of God we have to live among these evils until God takes us out of it but because we live in a wicked world doesn't mean we have to be wicked God is still working on all of us.

Your mom is just finding her way. She is struggling in her faith. So she needs the focus. It's not about you. It's about her. Just help her in her faith. Give her what she needs.

You're right. There is no difference. But it's what she needs. Listen to your tunes when you can. Also, do what you can to help her in her walk of faith.
