Rescue an adult dog from a pound or rescue group - take your niece to choose the dog to make sure they have "chemistry." Almost any dog will protect their family if they feel it is threatened, so I don't think you need to worry about breed so much. If you want easier clean-up, get an adult dog that is already house broken!
I personally love the american pit bull terrier http://www.pitprintsrescue.com/, but all of the breeds suggested so far would be great. Or get a mutt! Some of the best dogs I have had where who-knows-whats..

If protection is one of your considerations then size might need to be larger.
For a gentle but protective breed, you may want to consider a Black or Golden Laboradore.
Any breed you choose should be reserached by you and your niece. You both need to know how to be responsible pet owners and make sure that you are able to provide the dog with the proper care that it needs. You need to be familiar with local pet laws. Find a local Veteranarian and ask about the cost for neuter or spay proceedures and regular yearly shots. You must be willing to commit to the animal for as long as it is alive. (12-16 years)

If you want a medium dog Beagels, Shelties, Mini Collies are all good! They will bark if someone comes in the house.
If you want a big dog you could get a Lab, Spanel, Dalmation or Huskie! Maybe even a Rotweiler, they can be nice if they are not trained to be mean!
Good Luck!

I have a sheltie mix that is very lovable but very protective of me....they are really beautiful dogs.....my brothers both have pits....if you raise them from the time they are little they are extremely loyal to their families.....my one brother has two sons, 5 & 8 and two pits......they are like big babies with the boys and anyone they know but if someone would ever threaten either of the kids they would regret it......

I'd go with a BIG dog. It seems that big dogs are more level headed. I'd go to the pound.
