when a teen or minor commits a serious crime should the parent be punished as well???

The parents aren't sentenced by the courts, but they end up getting punished anyway. Someone has to pay the court costs and fines, as well as any restitution, and since the parents are responsible for their children, the parents have to pay. In addition, the parents can be ordered by the court to take part in certain classes or counseling if it is deemed necessary for the rehabilitation for the child.

The parents also might be required to rearrange their schedules and lives to meet the conditions of their child's probation. We order the homes to be alcohol and drug free, which means the parents can't drink at home. They have to transport their child to all required meetings and classes, and have to go to court with the child.

It depends first on the age. If we are talking about 12 -14 year olds maybe the parent should have to go to counseling if they are not home much to watch what their child is up to. The older ones should be responsible for their own actions. How can a parent or parents who both work see everything going on in the home when most of us have to work. No I do not feel the parent should be punished they didn't commit the crime....but they should be there for the consequences that will follow.

depends on the crime and the punishment you speak of. I think all parents should be held responsible to a certian degree for the actions of the child. But the child is his/her own person and has to learn to make their own decisions and judge what is right or wrong. and of course pay the price of the crime they commit.

Depends!

Generally no, but if it is a direct result of lack of parenting or supervision maybe! That is a big maybe!

Generally I am opposed to others paying for someone elses crime! And much of a childs actions in later years are dictated by peer pressure, not lack of parenting!

No. The teen made up his mind, wanted to smart out, and must now face the consequences for his decision
