I am 1/4 Cherokee but mygrandmom hid out in the north georgia/tenn hills and avoided the Trail of Tears...so there was no official record of my grandmom (squaw) except her marriage certificate/bible.
.....I have friends that get $$ thrown at them because they had a "Hispanic" grandparent.. with a "B"ave they can get GRANT $$ as a "Hispanic scholar". Do they have to have official records or live on a reservation???
..I could sure use tuition help as a minority rather than a white kid who graduated with a 4.0 ave and some credits from dual credit courses and "5"s on AP tests..My two brothers also scape by in college.. it doesnt seem fair!

You can put anything down as your ethnicity when you apply for college...what makes the difference is if you qualify for grants based on your ethnicity.

I too am in the same situation...my great grandparents did walk the trail and end up in Oklahoma. My grandfather left the reservation and was offered land by the Government back in the 1920's but he refused it because he wanted his family to prosper in the white man's world and not be identified with the Indians who were considered lower class citizens at the time. He refused to allow his children to keep Tribal Affiliation or take any subsidies from the government because of their heritage.

Now, my family is saying, hey, wait! We want our Tribal Benefits! My siblings and I are 1/6 and would qualify if we can prove our affiliation. We've had a tough time because of what grandpa did...and he died shortly after that leaving no documents.

If you are able to trace your papertrail and prove your tribal affiliation, go for it! It's worth it! Most tribes recognize your affiliation to 1/6th.

I am sorry, that your school did not show you your white people grant libraries in every cities. I sorry, that you can not have your white people money and the minority grants to helps them out for their family services to this country. I sorry, that minorities family members that was born on this land and was taking from them get some funding that many white people are taking.
