I've just had the same thing happen a month ago.I had sister cats who were 19 and one of them died.Fortunately,I have other cats, but my cat still missed her sister and wandered around, crying for days.I've just been giving her extra attention(cuddles, catnip, baby food meat, gourmet canned food, and just holding her and talking to her a lot)She seems to be coming around finally,as she is more active and doesn't cry so much.I also have a bird-feeder just outside the window where she likes to sit and watch the birds and squirrels.Just comfort her as you would a human who has lost a loved one and she should eventually come around. You can also ask your vet;they do give anti-depressants to animals these days.Good luck and hope you and your kitty are feeling better.

Don't want to sound down but our cat recently died and she was 16 years old. A few months before she died she would wine a lot more and wanted attention. As far as I'm aware she wasn't in any pain. Maybe you need to take it to the vet for a check up just to be sure she is ok or perhaps she just wants a little more company from you for a while.

You can get Rescue Remedy from a health foods store and treat the cat. You just shake the bottle well and put if on the fur between her ears. It is not a drug and cannot harm her and you need to treat three to four times a day for the next week to ten days.

Another choice would be the homeopathic remedy Ignaticia at 30C - one dose. You can find that at a pharmacy that carries homeopathic remedies - not the chain pharmacies. The Ignatcia is just a small pill that you dissolve on your fingertip in a drop of filtered water and rub it around her mouth and gums. You can take some yourself if you are experiencing grief over the loss of your cat.

Even using both can't harm her and will help alleviate the stress of her loss.

Well I don't know much about cats but i would say yes. I think you should get another cat to make sure he doesn't come depressed. I don't know if you have read the book "Where the Red Fern Grows" but in that book, two dogs are extremely close to eachother and when one dies, the other one doesn't eat or do anything because its cloest pal died.

It is likely that another cat would not solve this problem anyway so don't worry about that.
Give her lots of extra attention and try and be with her as much as possible. As she has always had his company the only substitute now is you and it is going to be really hard for her to adjust to life without him.
Over time she'll get used to life being just you and her.

She doesn't want another cat, either. It would be too much for her to get used to, at age 19. Just pet her a lot and treat her like she's special. You could wrap a heating pad in a towel, and switch the heating pad onto the lowest setting, to give her a nice warm comforting place to sit. (but don't leave it plugged in when you leave the house, obviously.)

I agree with the answers recommending time and TLC, but if she is not eating or it goes on too long, a visit to the vet who may prescribe a mild sedative for a short period, might be the only solution. If she is used to other people, perhaps friends would be prepared to come and give her a cuddle now and then since you can't spend all your time on this problem.
Hope this is useful: give the poor thing a hug from me.

Sometimes it just takes time.
Be sure to give her extra love, attention, and TLC. Also, did she get a chance for closure? It sounds stupid, but animals need this, too, especially if they're closes with another one. Animals can recognize death, and when the male died, you should have let her stay with/around him for a while, so that she could understand that he was gone. Just to give you an idea of how important this is, most vets will even let you and encourage you to bring your other pet to say goodbye if you're having another one put to sleep.

Try to comfort her, and dont try to calm her by giving her food. Take her to the vet, see if she has somthing wrong, that is sometimes the problem. Thats what happened with my cat she had water in her lungs and cried alot we thought it was because she missed our other cat. So just comfort her its the best way to keep her mind off things.

ps give her something to do and if shes a house cat let her outside but keep an eye on her
:)

Lots of TLC, which I am sure you have done. You could always try Feliway, it comes in either spray or diffuser that you plug in (like an air freshener) and it releases happy cat pheromones and makes them feel more settled and contented.

We got one when our cat was upset by our new dog and it calmed the cat right down. We got ours from the vet but you can get them online cheaper.
