Its rude, but not illegal at a public beach. Supreme Court says that one cannot expect privacy in public.

It isn't illegal to photograph anyone in a public place, but it's certainly inappropriate to do so without asking the indiividual's permission, particularly at a nude beach. Our society still considers nudity something of an aberration, and so there are many people who would not want a picture of them at a nude beach available to others. That's unfortunate, but it's how it is.
I'm sure that I've been photographed at the nude beach with my permission, and I'm certain that others have "sneaked" pictures of me (and probably most girls there) but it's a breach of etiquette and can get the photographer in trouble and ejected from the beach...or worse.
Hopefully, someday there willl be no stigma associated with being naked in public, but until that time, let's respect each other and keep cameras off the nude beach.

Orphanann is incorrect...it is perfectly legal (in the United States anyway) to photograph ANYONE in public. The caveat comes to PUBLISHING those photographs. Putting on the web is a big grey area, but normally one needs a model release to publish any recognizable picture of a person...except in the case of newspapers and other "editorial" uses of the photographs. Newspapers and tabloids can legally publish any photograph of anyone without a model release, if the picture was taken in a public place.
This is exactly why paparazzi can do what they do.

Yes it is illegal. However, you should not be going to the nude beach in the first place. It is wrong, immoral and plain stupid. What is the point? Laws should be passed to stop "Public Beaches" used as nude beaches. People want to get nude, let them do it on their backyard or private beaches, not on public land, where I do not wish to see ugly bodies or expose my children to amoral behavior.

Twenty or thirty years ago you may have found women on these beaches, but because of photography and the Internet they shy away now. So you're probably only going to find naked men.
