When politicians use the term 'rich', it usually means "if we gave you a number, you wouldn't like our ideas".

Rich is when you have enough money that you no longer need to work in order to maintain your standard of living. Remember Mike Tyson the ear-biting former heavy weight champ? He made $330 million during his pre-prison boxing career but a couple of years ago had to file for bankruptcy because his assets were about 6 million less than his debts. That's not rich.

If I could make 100,000 a year for 10 years I would be rich.

The figures that people are saying are indeed very rich. I believe if someone in this society has $100,000. in savings and is working, then they are indeed financially rich. Regardless of the fantastic quotes about the cost of living in San Francisco & New York City, there are plenty of people who live there that are not making 150 K + and they have a nice life.

I know a man who has 4 $300,000 cars. He lives in a $3 million dollar home. He has his own Lear jet. He pays $1000 a day for Cuban cigars and $20,000 for a week hookers. He is not rich by Comparison to others he knows in LA.

It depends on where they live. I grew up in SW CT and $300,000 a year offers you a 2000 sq ft house in a nice town or neighborhood. I consider rich when someone does not have to work anymore and can live the livestyle they desire: financially independent.

Depends on where you live...$100,000 a year is just getting by where I live here in California.

I would consider myself "Rich" at a minimum half million/year income and at least an additional 1 mil in assets.

If you can decide to play golf instead of going to work today and it won't change the amount of money you make this week, you're probably rich.

If you can go for three months with zero income and not lose your house, you're probably rich.

If you can let your mail pile up for six weeks and no one calls you on the phone to threaten you with something, you're probably rich.

to me the starting point of wealthy is debt-free .. rich to me i guess would be debt-free and owning ur own home and a brand new car and having enough money in the bank to never have to work again and live off the interest ... maybe 300,000 or so.

$100,000 is not alot - especially if you live in NY, California, Chicago, etc. Then throw in the large family factor.

National Geographic did a story about the San Francisco area that showed people making $150,000+ living in homeless shelters because they couldn't afford housing.

Anyone who does not need to work is rich to me. If they need a salary then they are not rich.
