I have a year old cat and yesterday my mom's friend left to go out of town and asked us to watch her dog. We are now watching this dog, and it's extreamly friendly, but how do I let these 2 play with each other?
After work yesterday, I came home and started to play with the dog, I brought it near my cat to see what it would do and let it introduce eachother, and my cat poofed up her tail and kinda punched the dog. I'm afraid to leave them alone because they might hurt one another! Right now, my mom took the dog with her to run her errends, but any good advice? Or should I just let them be? It's funny though, when the dog has its back turned and walking away, my cat stalks it and visaversa! Really cute and I want them to play with eachother too!!

Thanks all for your help! :)

We have two cats and the first time they got to know my in-laws' dog it was the same thing - fluffy tail, smacking, growling and all that stuff. And as soon as the dog walked away the cats followed him and played with his tail. One of our cats is still not 100% comfortable with him, but she just leaves him alone and ignores him. The other cat loves the dog and they play together.
They should be fine! ;o)

well i think u should let them to get to know each other...but the fact that there cat and dog....2 different animals makes it hard to communicate. like a Chinese and a Canadian talking ......they don't have a clue. but if things start getting really um "messy" then separate them. but if they were kitten and puppy they would get along better. but they will never be "best Friends" but will not attack each other

I say leave them in a bag and don't let them come out until they mate and produce some sort of evil half-spawn. Call it a cog, or a dat, or something witty. Maybe you'll get a Nobel prize, who knows?

dogs and cats are like that sometimes will be all cuddly one Minuit but then they will be mad at each other. no cure as for as i can tell but you should let them work it out.
