When I go to bed she sits and cries downstairs, she has food and we have a catflap, is it attention-seeking? How do I stop her doing it?

I have a 19 month old tabby who, bless her heart was orphaned at 3 weeks and I stepped in as mommy. Now, she really thinks I am her mother cause why else would she sit there and cry every time I close a door in her face. I got her for selfish reasons. My other child, Booger, is 3. and a year ago was showing clear signs that she was lonely and needed someone with her all the time. I truly think your cat is lonely. I let mine sleep with me because they know nothing else. If you treat your cat like a child most of the time and then not allow them to be with you when you sleep, it gives them a reason to feel abandoned. they are very needy, they can be independent but I have found them to be mostly a pack oriented social animal. make sure you give her allot of loving. or you could try and play with her so she will be tired to go to bed. What ever you choose to do get her in the routine. She will catch on.

I let my cat (Shadow) sleep in my room so i don't have that problem at night, but when i go to the local shops (2minute walk away), he always follows me. If he's lagging behind and i dissappear from his view, then he's like yours.....crying and wailing, so i have to back-track til he see's me. If i go any further than the local shops i have to lock him in the house.
I used to have 2 cats, but his brother died a few months ago. When his brother was alive Shadow never behaved liked this. So i guess the reason behind his behaviour is because he doesn't like to be alone. I'm thinking about getting Shadow a friend, but it's difficult because he's not at all friendly towards other cats, so i'm not sure what to do.
I suppose another reason for this behaviour is that they just love us a lot.

Hello! Yes, she is seeking attention from you and also remember that, depending on her age, she could also be on heat which is very normal from female felines. You could try to get her to your room when you go to bed and let her sleep close to you. (Don't forget her cat litter and food) Talk to her, cuddle her and once you go to sleep, she would eventually go to sleep too. It comforts them to sleep with their master and also it makes them feel they are love and cared for. You will notice a difference in a couple of days, as long as you have her close to you at night time , she will actually stop the cry. Cats don't get lonely easily but, they do seek attention and like listening when you talk specially if you say cute words to them, they move their tail slowly while you talk sweet to them and pay attention. Try it and you will have good results.

My cat always slept on my bed and never once cried or wailed. During the middle of the night they wander off and go and sleep on their own. They just like to know they have the choice.

This is particularly a trait of young cats. As she isn't scratching at the door to get to you it sounds as if she is being attention seeking and probably likes the sound of her own voice. Leave her and she'll learn that you are not going to entertain her during the night and she has to go find entertainment else where.

I would really suggest getting your cat a companion when she is home alone. That way she has someone to play with and you have two time the love coming back to you. If you aren't willing to get another cat, then think about spending time with your cat just you and her that way when you leave she would have already had alone time with you. Good Luck!

Assuming she has a bed downstairs, its just attention seeking, she knows you can hear her, just leave her be and she will settle down in her bed, or go out.

There is a spray and a plug in available for cats when they feel stressed, the spray is called 'feliway' and the plug in is called DAP plug in for cats.Available from vets. The plug in works just like an air freshner plug in. Use it in the room she is most in and expected to sleep in. It contails relaxing and familiar pheremones and really works well. I use it for my 13yr old tabby who gets easily stressed when left.

Wrap a towel around a hot water bottle as well as a ticking clock. It calms them down for some reason. Good luck!
