Try the classifieds in the newspapers in your area or look on the message boards at your local supermarkets. I wouldn't suggest the animal shelter in our area(don't know about yours) due to the fact they now charge $100 to adopt a dog plus references.

I would recommend looking at the various humane societies, shelters, and rescue groups, especially if you're not a breed-nazi and don't care if you have a pure-bred. You would quite literally be saving a life, and you would be paying a fraction of the cost of buying a dog from a breeder. I always adopt shelter dogs, and they are very appreciative if you give them a good life. They know you took them from a bad place, and will love you for it.

To find a small dog at a shelter may take some effort, but it will be worth it. Trust me, you won't find a better dog than a shelter dog.

Many people advertise in the classified adds for free puppies. Make sure however that the puppy is healthy take it to a vet and get it checked out. Puppies a malls are usually to expensive and many of them come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are humane ways of breeding puppies and should be shut down. Their are also some farms that have puppies for real cheap. I have had a dog in my life that was a good dog and he lived 15 years and was purchased at a farm. If you want to go the safe route make sure your cheaper dog is worth it and make sure the owners have its papers. Even though many puppies look fine on the outside. Puppies are expensive so you could check out your pound or humane society. There are many puppiess and dogs that will be humanely euthanized if someone does not take them in.

Check the want ads in the local newspaper. Watch for ads titled
" Free to a good home"
Lots of folks have unwanted puppies and dogs that need good homes. Even the humane societyhas to charge for the care of the dog. But remember.. with the dog comes responsibility. Can you afford its food? Its shots? Do you have the time to spend with this dog? Think before you rush out and regret it later.. But if you decide to become a pet owner, you will find the true meaning of love . Good Luck!

Adopt from the local shelter or a breed rescue (they are national and have dogs all over the US - including your area.)

Start here to find the breed rescues for all the AKC breeds:

Do give serious thought to adopting from an adult from a breed rescue. The clubs' breed rescues go to a great deal of trouble to determine the dog's temperment, personality, likes and dislikes (particularly kids and cats and other dogs in the household), health, and level of training. They make a huge effort to match the right dog to the right home - and if they don't have one they think will be suitable for your home, they won't place it. Great way to avoid the puppy training, newpapers, chewing.......They have dogs that are purebred and part-bred (1/2 or so of their breed.)

pick one up from the pound. they are usually mutts which is good because the more breeds that are in a dog, the more resistance it has to diseases. you can also get any shots it may need at the spca for really cheap. that way you save a dogs life and have a lifetime friend. our county pound usually only holds dogs for one week before it euthanizes them. and also either spay or neuter
