Religion, or the lack thereof, is not a reliable indicator of one's morality. One can be completely irreligious and still be ethical. If there were no God, and somebody went upon a murderous rampage, then that person would've have shoddy morals to begin with. The existence or non-existence of God is irrelevant to one's moral character. I'm religious, but that doesn't mean that I necessarily believe that I'm morally superior to my atheist friends, who have repeatedly proven to be morally sound individuals.

I see that you are a very "humble" man and very "wise" in your mastery over the Art of Question and Language; and all the rest of us are, unfortunately incapable of thinking outside the box. Perhaps, that's why we need such savants as you to tell us what we are.
Now, to get "hypothetical", if we woke up and "discovered" that "God" never existed, it would make little or no difference to us insofar as our conduct is concerned. The simple reason being that to become a "rapist" you need to be a highly "inadequate" man. To be a thief, you need to have no regard for the rights of others to their property. To be a murderer, you need to have no regard towards the others right to live. Please note that God, didn't appear anywhere here. So why should it make any difference?
God is the Guiding Light towards Good, not a beacon for Bad.
If you presume that God is the basis of all morality, that's your stance.
How can we help you?
May I suggest a good psychiatrist who can help you with your inadequacies and conflicts in morality?

I think the numbers would be quite small in the population that already does not believe in a god. There are many non-believers in the world today that live good ethical and moral lives. They live according to the law of their respective lands. Now, as for the god fearing group I think there might be a bit higher turn for the worse. Many born again christians have already experienced various "sins" in their past and know the instant gratitude that it brought them. These are the ones I would be concerned about. "No god, oh my! How I've wasted my time! Let's go rape and pilage." Beware the man that says he knows god. A godly man is not always a goodly man.

Around the world, there is a very strong correlation (correlation obviously not necessarily meaning causation) of countries with high proportions of atheism also having low crime and high social justice. Countries like Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Japan.. even my own country of Australia in a way. This at least shows that people are capable of being very moral without a belief in God.
The US may conceivably be an exception if it eventually catches up the rest of the western world, due to the very high (by far the highest in the world) proportion of narcissists and sociopaths in that country (eg. the answer above me). Then again, as people say, this could be a direct result of the lack of moral development that goes with fundy religion. Or then again just cos the US is so individualistic. I dunno but good luck!

Well, no. There can be morality without God in one's life today. God is what drives most to doing moral things, however. If one is, let's say, Agnostic, they can still know whether killing an innocent man is right or not.
As a mass basis 'do's and dont's', the constitution is what drives people, on a certain level of priority, to act morally, correct? Well, from what I know, some of the Ten Commandments practically founded the basis of some of America's political standpoints. No matter how much people try to, it's almost impossible to separate church from state when you get down to where most of the constitutional rights were derived from.
Also, if they found anything that would make them question the exsistance of God, that wouldn't differ one's actions in morals or religion if they REALLY believed in it.
Well, that's at least my perspective.

Most people wouldn't because even if your premise God is proven to have never existed, the morality built around the teachings of God and built into the laws tha govern still exist.
I wouldn't become a rapist, murderer or thief because even if God never existed, laws remain to make those things illegal. However, law and morality are not the same thing, but the punishment of man then would prevent me from those activities.
However, I suggest that the loss of God would speed the already existant decay of our morality and that 100 years from now, what is illegal today is not so in the future.

FRANKLY i feel the reason to be moral and loving is really not all that much to do with religion at all .......
look at all the priest molestations just to name one thing ,it matters NOT weather their is proof i dont think any decent person is going to go off the deep end and murder and rape .
i think the majority of people truly our not into pain and that GOD keeps them good ,it is inherent in the person i think ........
but then i am a spiritualist and have many different views on the nature of humans ,but my answer is no i dont think if they proved Jesus was not the savior or that their was no God so therefore no satan that people would change for the worse as a matter of fact it might make the world a hell of a lot better [in my oponion ]no more reasons for using religion for war and hatred .

I say if their is no God,the world has no destiny and no purpose.I, however know there is God Almighty, Creator of the Universe. I have a personal relationship with Him thru His Son ,Jesus.
Satan & demons believe in God, that doesn't keep them from so much evil & destruction. So many rapist, murders, theives etc.. exists because they act as if there is no God. Nothing new here on this planet.
PS. I guess that news, reported would be on CNN.

Your real question is whether there is any basis for morality without a belief in God. Of course there is. Man developes morality just to protect himself. If I can hit or kill or rob anyone freely, then I'd better lock myself in to a very safe place because anyone can do that to me. So belief in God is not the only basis for morality. It is, however, the highest basis for morality. It motivates for morality even when society is turning a blind eye.
Obviously not everyone who believes in God is more moral than others. Belief gives a motivation for morality, but unfortunately does not always produce morality.
DL, I would be rather uncomfortable with your answer and with your morality. Sounds like a morality based on fear and not on faith and love for God. Perhaps I am misreading you.

Whether you are a religious person or not, there has been scientific research proving that rapist, murderers and thieves are mentally inclined to behaive this way due to childhood experiances, or certain tendencies or genes being passed on to them by their parents. Christians can be criminals as well. However those of us who are morally inclined to be contributing member of society would more than likely live that life, even God was proven not to exist. It is simply a better way to live your life. More fulfilling and positive.
