depending on if you feed him/her wet food. if you leave dry food out, the cat will eat when he/she is bored, hungry,or just in general feed itself. I have a cat and she is about year old now and the last time I took her to the vet for her booster shots, the vet told me that some researchers studied cat's behaviors when left alone. came out that cats will eat almost 10~20 times a day!!! small bites then 5~20 min later come back for more. thats how some people end up with fat cats.

best way is to feed him/her is in the morning. 1 small can of wet food. do not leave the dry food out! go do your thing and then feed him/her around dinner time. keeps the cat well balanced and healthy! :) of coarse add little snacks for him/her. you have to spoil your cat sometimes!! :P

Most bags of cat food have a recommended feeding guide printed on the side. They will give you a range of amounts to feed your cat depending on it's weight. It's up to you if you want to put out the entire amount at once or break it up into several servings. Most cats eat a little at a time throughout the day so there isn't much harm in setting out all of his or her daily portion at once but if your cat is one of those who scarfs it all down as soon as it's in the bowl then it may be better to break up the total amount to be fed into 3 or 4 servings throughout the day. Just follow what's recommended on whichever food you use. Since some have different fat percentages & calorie amounts the amount to feed your cat will probably vary from brand to brand. If you're not sure you can always call your vet and they can provide you with a good idea of how much to feed your kitty.

for that id say when ever there hungry...but if hes always hungry then only give them a handful about 2-3 times a day. but if hes outside cat then one in the morning and then when they come in give them some. the reason to give 1 handful is because they only are suppose to eat only a mouse portion every little while. some people fill thier cats bowls and then they get soo used to eating...and then u'll end up with a fat cat. and some cats like fresh food and they dont want food thats been sitting all day

Some say that it should be 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the afternoon. Only twice a day but I do it in 1/2 cups throughout the day that way they get what they need and there is always food in there bowl for them. That's per cat and it also depends how old your cats are.

What is the general health of the cat and how much does it weigh? These two questions determine how much an adult cat should eat as well as the cat's general appetite. Usually, three times per day covers it. Since all cats are different, talk to your vet.

most cats you can leave food out for all the time and they'll only eat when they're hungry

I have possibly the only exception to this rule. My boys only get fed once a day or my Siamese mix will just eat and eat and eat.

I'd say it depends on how overweight or underweight your cat is and feed them according to the amounts put on the cat food bag. I left food out all the time for my older cat and now she's overweight and has to eat weight control food. I feed her according to the directions on the bag now.

1/4 cup in the morning 1/4 cup in the evening. normally. my girls have an automatic buffet 24/7 and as active as they are, I'll keep it that way until they start slowing down and gaining weight as they get older. Then I'll have to close the buffet in favor of breakfast and dinner only.

Probably 2-4 servings a day but it depends on how big of servings.
