The most popular, in fact the most popularly built, is the Cessna 172. It's very stable and just about every instructor knows quite well how to fly them and instruct in them. It can seat 4.

A Cessna 152 or 150 is an even more economical choice, but the two seater will not handle two heavy adults with full tanks of gas.

The Cessnas are reputed to be the cheapest planes to maintain. Some people prefer the 172 because it is a bit heavier and a little less subject to the whim of the wind.

Pipers are also excellent training planes. The 140 is very economical, a 180 a bit more. They are low wing and many people like these better. They are a little more expensive to maintain, as their struts require attention, often.

If economics are not an issue, a lot of people like the Cirrus SR-20. It's a bit faster than all of the above, so perhaps it's better for after you have been a pilot a while. It all depends on what you like and your instructor. This is the plane that Cory Lidel died in. Currently Cirrus is outselling Cessna, as they are very modern and efficient. Higher speeds require quicker decsion making.

Good luck and persue your dream!

From where I'm from, the Cessna 172 is probably the best aircraft to train on. It gets quite 'hot and high' (hot temperatures and high airfield elevations), so it offers the best performance at a good price. The performance bit aside, it's just a brilliant trainer aircraft, which good handling chacteristics, which is important when you are learning to fly. Good alternatives could be the C152 and Piper PA28 Cherokee series.

cessna 150 is a very good trainer, it is the industry standard. The 150 is known to be a very forgiving airplane as well. If you get into any trouble just let go of the column and the plane will right itself.
