I was a consultant for Home Interiors and Gifts for two years. I loved it, I loved that they always had new stuff coming out, and I loved to help people make their space fabulous. But people sometimes aren't open to ideas, even though they say they are. That was frustrating. Not that I wanted to decorate their space MY way, but I'd offer plenty of advice or suggestions and they really just didn't want to change their space at all. So as far as an interior designer, I guess the only insite I can give you is that it's fabulous to be creative and learn rules of thumb for color, accessories, etc,. .. the down side I'd see would be a client not open to your suggestions.
