What would be appropriate for a woman to wear to a formal adult reception after a wedding? A suit, nice slacks with nice shirt, a dress? Any suggestions? I was thinking slacks with nice sweater.

Guess it depends where you live. In a major metro area, if it's a "formal" adult reception in the evening, a short or tea length cocktail dress would be appropriate. If it's formal daytime, a dress or skirt/suit would be appropriate. Slacks w/sweater sounds like a weekend party at someone's house kind of thing, not for a formal adult reception.

I think when they say formal.(if that is what is in the invitation) They mean formal. Like a long dress. A slacks and sweater is not considered formal. If you dont have a lot of money use an older dress or get one from a discount place Usually when people say formal it means suit coat...and tie. .For girls its long formal dress. no pants suits or definately not a sweater. How would you feel if you showed up and all the girls were wearing dresses and you had a sweater on...Nix the sweater definately, cant say it enough......One thing i forgot though was it definately is location varied. Example a formal wedding in Montana, is different than a formal wedding in New York
