Now that's funny cuz I have a 4 year old cat that will play fetch and a 6 month old puppy that will chase anything I throw. DUH... you have to train them from when they are small.

Well, this is what I did with my 11month dog: Stayed in a quiet room in the house Put him on a long leash and held the other end Showed him the ball, and waved it around so he wanted it. Next, while I just threw it I yelled "Fetch" Then, I called his name and grabbed the ball from his mouth, while saying "Give it" if he would not let go, I took the top of his mouth and lifted it from the ball If he didn't come to me I would reel him in with the leash I would praise him by rubbing his chest and say "Good boy!" and stuff like that, or once in a while give him a small piece of a chicken hot dog I kept repeating this procedure until he didn't need the leash I repeated it without the leash Then, took him outside and repeated it I slowly raised the distraction levels until he played great Now we can play at the dog park with no problem! When you want to stop playing, just give the ball to the dog and let him have fun Good luck! And some dogs it takes longer and some dogs it takes less time Oh ya, my puppy is a border collie so it was funny to see him pounce on the ball!

you actually can teach a cat to fetch. Sometimes they are too them selfs and seems like they don't interact with people, but they do. And a dog probably would chase a ball of yarn because they like to play. But it is dangerous because if they swallow the string it will get stuck in their intertines.

I had a cat that would sort of "fetch." She really liked for me to throw this little bouncy ball for her. Then she would ZOOM after it and bring it back in her mouth. But, it wasn't 100% fetching b/c she didn't bring the ball back to me directly. Instead, she would drop it somewhere "near" me. But, I didn't teach her how to do this. I just discovered her bouncing the ball by herself one day & I threw it & she just really enjoyed it. She preferred me to be at the top of the stairs and throw it down the stairs so that it would bounce. Then she would bring it back up the stairs.

I personally know a cat that will fetch. There has to be an instinct to do the task. I would give a cat one of those fun looking balls and see if he or she can play with it and then throw it to them and see what they do.

Both of my cats play fetch. They absolutely love it! One of the cats will actually come up to me and drop a ball or toy mouse next to me. Then she'll wait and meow (hers is more of a squeak) until I throw it. Otherwise, any time you pick up one of their toys, they expect you to throw it. I just decided when we first got them that it would be cool if they played fetch. So I just started holding their toys in front of them until they got really excited, and then I would throw it. They figured out pretty quickly that if they brought it back I would keep throwing it. So it's definitely possible to teach them to fetch.

The same reason that humans don't scratch your couch all up - or roll over when you tell them to do it.
