Hi there! I'm from the southern U.S. and have a heavy country accent. My mom's boyfriend is from New York and sometimes he can't even understand me (but I can't understand him sometimes either, lol). What I'm afraid of is people judging me thinking that because I talk southern that I'm ignorant. What would you do? Do you think I should try to talk "less country" or just let people deal with it? Thanks for the help!

Another thing you might do is watch tv (alone) and practice repeating the anouncers words. The more you speak a certain way, the stronger the tendency is ingrained.

I personally think that your accent is a part of who you are! I wouldn't change it at all! If you live in NY, you will naturally lose some of your Southern Draw in time. One thing that may help with your man's ma: slow down a little bit when you speak. I heard that Southerners and New Yorkers speak the fastest out of people here in the US, so just slow it down a little bit. If you talk to her enough, she will eventually understand you.

I live in Kansas and had this friend who's Korean. His mom is from Korea (don't know North or South though, would assume South) and NOBODY could understand her.... even dude's girlfriend. I just litened very attentively to her. I ended up interpreting what people with heavy Asian accents would say to my friends because I understood them best!

Don't worry about feeling ignorant either. You will wow them with your intellegence and your kindness enough that they won't even think twice about you being a Southern Belle!

Many people (specially from New York) think country accent is from ignorant people. But you can always prove them wrong!! Let people deal with it, you are what you are and you shouldn't be worried about what they think of you.

Now, If you can't stand the "embarrassment", you can always try modulating it up a little bit. But don't loose it all at once, because that's part of your heritage.
