There is no sin in listening to rap. There is such a thing as Christian rap.
But be sure to surround yourself with good words and sounds. If you constantly hear "F*** the police, kill them Ni**as," etc., part of you will think that is okay. Do not fall into this trap.

There are SO many reasons why rap is spiritually bad for you that an entire sermon could be written on the topic.

But the most important thing for you to understand is that everything you put into your head, from music, to art, to television and movies and daily conversation influence your mind's view of normalcy. It directly impacts the ability of your conscience to recognize right from wrong.

In other words, everything you put into your brain influences you either toward righteousness or sin in your own life.

When your brain is constantly deluged in profanity, you become numb to the meaning of those words. You start to marginalize their importance. I promise you that listening to such words WILL eventually (although indirectly) influence you to sin, even if it's only the sin of unclean thoughts.

If you TRULY love God and want to obey him, you should run away from anything that could influence you to disobey him.

"Raise your hands now to testify Your confession will be crucified You're a sacrificial suicide Like a dog that's been sodomized Stand Up! All the white boys Sit Down! And the black girls Stand Up! You're the soldiers Sit Down! Of the new world Put your faith in a miracle And it's non-denominational Join the choir we will be singing In the church of wishful thinking A fire burns today Of blasphemy and genocide The sirens of decay Will infiltrate the faith fanatics Oh, bless me Lord for I have sinned It's been a lifetime since I last confessed I threw my crutches in "The river of a shadow of doubt" And I'll be dressed up in my Sunday best Say a prayer for the family Drop a coin for humanity Ain't this uniform so flattering? I never asked you a god damn thing A fire burns today Of blasphemy and genocide The sirens of decay Will infiltrate the faith fanatics Don't test me Second guess me Protest me You will disappear I want to know who's allowed to breed All the dogs who never learned to read Missionary politicians And the cops of a new religion A fire burns today Of blasphemy and genocide The sirens of decay Will infiltrate the inside" -East Jesus Nowhere by Green Day

Ya know, my son listened to Christian rap (found under rap in the music section at the Chrstian bookstore) until he became a teenager and now likes the same music you do. I can tell you're heart is in the right place and all I can say is if this is bothering you, you need to listen. It bothers my son but he is trying so hard to fit in with his peers who don't share his beliefs. Go with your gut, you sound like a mature man of God :-)

Yes it is a sin. If the music you listen to doesn't glorify God, it's not worth listening to. Why would you want to hear people saying/doing all the things God told them not to? And, do you know that some way or another, this music will be the center of your life and not God? The Bible says to be careful what you say. These rappers are doing everything the Bible says not to, so you shouldn't even listen to them.

Col 3:16 Let the word of the Messiah dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with undeserved pardon in your heart to Yahweh!

Amo 5:23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.(I don't think Yahweh likes christian music either)

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

When a religion starts dictating what your ears hear, you should jump ship. It's one thing to be selective but I'm a hip hop head and I couldn't do with out. I think 50 cent is garbage and gives hip hop a bad name, Snoop lost his way too. Not all hip hop is about "bltches, hoes, clothes, bling, cars, and slangin." There is positive hip hop. Check out KRS-One, DeLaSoul, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lord Jamar, Brand Nubian, Flynn Adam Atkins, Binary Star,or Wu Tang. All positive and none offensive. Peace!

rap itself is not bad...and non-christian rap is not bad as long as the words are not dishonoring to God. Philippians 4:8 says
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.

if your music measures up to those standards you're OK. the language you described doesn't really fit those standards don't you think? God Bless! :)
