No. They lower power in all four engines. The engine speeds are close to maximum but there is less air so less fuel is burned at altitude.
The P-3 Orion will shut down two engines while on patrol to increase endurance. This is the only operational aircraft I know that shuts down engines in flight as a matter of flight routine.

The pilot of a Boeing 747 would not shutdown any engine at cruise altitude. In a jet you use a higher power setting for climb and when reaching cruising altitude and speed, a cruise power setting is used that might be less than climb power, depending on the altitude. Sometimes that power difference is negligible.

No,all four engines are used. You're right about the power... the engines use a lot less power, once cruising speed and altitude are attained, compared to the power used to get there...

I have heard of MD-11 / DC-10 pilots and Falcon 900 pilots will reduce power on the #2 engine in order to save fuel if say on a long shallow decent from altitude, but never heard of fully shutting them down.
On the ground however, it is very common to shut one/two off for taxi or during long delays.

NO. NO. NO. As you thought; the engines spool down when cruising. Imagine; A sudden emergency, and the pilot needs full power NOW! ` (put the emergency on hold while two engines need to start and warm up?) See what I mean?

Of course they don't 'turn off' engines. Is this a serious question or a joke? And they don't use less power at altitude either. They burn less fuel because the air is thinner - that's all.

Nope, what is the point of a 4 engine plan that only uses 2 engine was of fuel and everythink else.

No. Each engine has electrical generators that power the aircraft and also hydraulic umps for the flight controls etc. To switch off any engine will actually lead to higher fuel consumption and reduction in aircraft flight controls.

yup, they lower the power in all 4 engines. when they reach cruising altitude, the planes then use less fuel .

They lower one engine at each side so they dont waste fuel and they dont "turn off" the engines they'll crash !! and then it is going to be the 6/11 or somthin! It would be a major worldwide disaster if they turn off the engines!!!
