Get a copy of the bible in plain English. Ask God to help you understand what you read and read part of it every night, starting with the New Testament. Find a Church that you feel comfortable in and go there. If there is a monastery near you arrange for a visit or go with a group on retreat. That is a start. After awhile you will want to read other books and learn to mediate, etc.

First you should accept Jesus as your Savior. Jesus said, "No man comes unto the Father but by me."
After that Pray unceasingly, fast, and read the word of God. Through the word of God you come to learn the mind and ways of God.

Find out his personality/character/likes/dislikes/humor etc. by reading what He wrote about Himself.
