Not any more. These days if someone is a danger to themseves or others, there is a procedure that is generally followed in the mental wards.

First the person is worked with one on one, if that doesn't work, medications are used to help the person deescalate. Finally, after all else has failed, the doctor may order restraints to be used.

Typically these days these are leather restraints on the persons wrists and ankles and they are restrained to a secure bed. This happens only until they are no longer a danger to themselves or others.

No and I recently retired after working thirty years in the field. Today psychotropic medications, mood alterating chemical restraints are used. These are more human and the person can be assisted to eventually return to the general community and hopefully have an average life.

straitjackets are meant to keep a patient from harming themselves or others but I think they control that with medication more nowdays......but they still use restaints on occasions

I work on an acute psychiactric ward and I can assure you they are not used
