It seems like some weird unexplained phenomenon to me. Very cute, though.

I'm not talking when they're scared, but when they're playing, as the term "hyper" would suggest.

My kitten does this when he's ALL ALONE, & no one else is playing with him, so he can't possibly be angry or scared unless he's afraid of or angry at himself.

It's instinctive. Even when playing by himself, he's "imagining" an adversary and his tail will puff up to make him appear bigger. It's not something he thinks about, i.e. "Hmmm...I'm only playing so I won't puff up my tail right now". When cats get "hyper" they also get aggressive and when they're feeling aggressive their fur puffs out.

Well, that's a question wich I can anser!
Cats tales puff up when they play because play is how they lern to use the safty fetures they are aquiped with! Such is why they climb your curtins is the same as climbing a tree to avoid a dog or jump in the air when they see a play mate is the same as jumping out of the way of harm! Excitement at play or fear is the same in all beings even people so friend that is why your kitty's tail puffs up!:)

Why is a good and probably unanswerable question. All my cats don't do it and one definitely does.

Sorry I missed the kitten thing. I am sure you have seen your kitten run sideways so that his whole body is facing forward when playing with another kitten. This just makes them appear larger and more formidable.

I think they do it for defence.
My cat does that a lot.
Most of the time he'll come out from behind the table with his back and tail arched and it will be 3 times its normal size.
you're right, it's really cute though.

Cats tails get fluffy when they are scared or feel trapped, it makes them look bigger to other animals. Kittens sometimes do this while playing because they are learning how to try to stay safe.

Play is just practice for life; they are trying out their fighting skills and practicing intimidation for when they are big jungle cats.
