Our son's birthday is in January and we have a small home so entertaining all the grandparents etc isn't really an option.
Has anyone else had spring or summer parties for their kids and if so how can you not confuse the child? I don't want to spoil him with 2 parties a year...let alone 2 days of gifts.
Any suggestions?

Would love to do something outdoors but chances are that it will be way below zero where we live.

rent out a room and take them swimming at a hotel...that way everyone can stop by and have cake and ice cream and the kids can play and the mess is not in your home.

When I was younger, my parents would sometimes throw me and my younger siblings 2 parties, ( I am the oldest of 4). We grew up in a small house also, so it was hard to entertain a big crowd. My parents would have a party for the family, and a party for a few friends.
Depending on how old the child is, explain that you are going to celebrate one day with they family and one day with their friends.

If you feel like this is too much, you could also do something like Chuck E Cheese, or someplace for a pizza party. Also, another thing we used to do, is have birthday parties at a park, so that the kids can play, and the grown ups can mingle and cook hot dogs or something.

I had a luau for my son's 2nd birthday. We did the limbo, played pin the coconut on the palm tree and danced to Hawaiian music. We grilled hotdogs and hamburgers and there was no mess inside the house. You didn't say how old your son is, but we have also had bowling parties (the bowling alley will provide everything but the cake for a flat fee), skating parties (skating rink provides everything but cake) and movie parties (lots of movie theaters have party rooms and will provide what you need). We've had as many as 60 people (luau) and as few as ten.

I would just have it at your house. Or just invite grandparents, great-grandparents and aunts and uncles. Try to make it small, cuz then it won't be so hard on you. Me, my son's birthday is Nov. 1st, and I'm having two parties!! One for my side and one for his dad's family. I really didn't want to, but I'm in the same situation!! Good luck in your choice!!!!

rent a hall like the American legion . you can have at least 50 people . it doesn't cost much and your son will be able to see everyone.if money is tight then have it out doors or ask the grandparents or some family members to have it at their place.

I woudn't give them two parties, but look into renting a hall or a back room at a restaurant. It might be more costly, but it would help. Good Luck!
