I was never notified by my website hosting company about some lates that i had. I did not know about it until it was in collections

Stephen F is right. You probably authorized them to send notices by email. You could argue about it but if it's in collection, it's been sometime since you quit paying. My suggestion would be to "argue" your case to collection company (or original creditor if possible) by your contact, and work out payment arrangements. Billing is a convenience; it's not required by law. You owed the money once you purchased or used your credit card; they don't even legally have to send you a statement for you to owe the money.

Read the agreement you made with them. Did you agree to be notified by e-mail. My guess is you did. Never sign anything you haven't read. Don't even sign a cash register receipt without reading it.
