As everyone has said, Windows is used by more businesses and individuals so it has a much larger support base. But you can try Linux on your own computer without actually installing it. You can use what's called a "live CD". When you're finished playing with it, remove the CD and your computer will never know you were using Linux. You can download and burn an .iso file to a blank disk or you can order up to 5 disks free of charge.

Money comes into it. Vista Home edition is going to be expensive when it comes out - I'm guessing around $170-$200. A full user-friendly Linux edition, like Mepis, will cost you about $10, or even nothing if you burn your own CD (it's open source, so that's 100% legal).

Please try Linux (especially Mepis) - it looks SOOOOO cool - XP and Vista are really boring compared with it. Linux gives you rock-solid security, so good that you don't even need anti-virus or security software. Surf to the worst hacking/pop-up site on the web with Firefox under Linux, and their attacks will bounce off your PC like air gun pellets bouncing off a tank!

There's no good answer to that. You can find dozens of different linux sites that have a "smaller" version that you can try right on a windows computer, without hurting anything. Just google "linux sites" or something like that and find one. Kinda fun to try it out. Linux OS's have some limitations though - and if you're a beginner or not too computer-savvy, it's best to stick with Windows.

Microsoft XP, due to greater support base. Linux and it's various flavors, even though open source, is not really for the home consumer market.

As with most questions like this, the best answer to give is that it depends.
Here is my view on each:

XP:
Very easy to learn
Great for the average email checking, game playing, paper writing user
All software is compatible (or it should be)
Security is always an issue.

Linux:
much more secure
cheaper
Pretty big learning curve for the average user
software isn't always compatible
probably best for network security/backbone

Linux is much more efficient in using the computer resources, but Windows has many more programs that work with it.
