It varies from state to state. I would recommend searching for Department Motor Vehicles and your state. But you should be able to find a wealth of information (in addition to stuff you don't need) on what you need to do to get your car tag.
Step One, if you don't already have it, is to get your drivers license.
If your dad has signed over the title to you that is Step Two.
Here is where the fun begins:
Many states require insurance before you can register the car, so Step Three will be to get insurance, which at the age of 16 will likely be expensive; it doesn't help that your car is red. Use a couple online quotes and a couple phone quotes to get an idea of how much it will cost. Ask your dad for help in understanding coverage amounts, deductibles and that sort of thing; don't feel pressured to take the first offer. And just because it is the cheapest offer doesn't make it the best.
Step Four: Once you have the title, your drivers license, and insurance, then go to the department of motor vehicles to register.

First, go to an insurance agent (you might try Progressive.com) and get at least liability insurance. This will be the cheapest insurance, and it is required by law to have it. The price varies from person to person, depending on driving record, etc. Since you are 16, it will likely be higher for you.
Then, go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to register your car. You will need proof of your address, such as a letter from the parent you live with, or maybe your drivers license. You will also need your insurance certificate, and some places require emissions test results as well. Also bring your tilte, as you may need to transfer it to your name. All in all, I don't know how much it will cost total, so you might call the DMV for their costs.

okay. the first thing you have to do is BEG your dad to at least put your insurance in his name. this will save you at least 50% a year. if you put it in your name it will cost $1200-$3000 (allstate/geico) depending on where you live. go to the websites of insurance agents for free estimates. your car isnt new so it shouldnt be too expensive. bc you're 16 your rates will skyrocket. this happened to me.. GOOd LuCK!! =)
you also need to take the title to the car and your license, birth ceritfercate and money to pay for the plates they will give you. put the plates on the car.
then take the registration (that you got at the dmv) and take them to the insurance place that you will be using. give the papers to the agent and they will charge you again based on your age, age of the car, license, driving record etc.

It depends on if your state recognizes you as a legal adult! I think you have to be 18 to sign legal documents and a title for ownership is a legal document...Try esurance for an online quote. They will ask for your birthdate in the quote process. You arent legal to sign a contract so you may be denied the opportunity to pay for insurance too. Are you and emancipated minor?

you can go online and get quotes from different insurance companies like geico.com or allstate.com they'll give you a quote in 5-10 minutes and if you like the price you can get insurance. To get the car registered go to the DMV make sure you have the title, some money to register it if its not already, and make sure its been smogged.
