Religion depends on obedience. Obedience is easier to measure in units of fault than it is in units of achievement. So you need rigid lines to cross and not cross and rigid definitions of what makes you "one of us" and what makes you "one of them". Them of course being the name for those who do what you can't do if you want to be one of us.

It's like when we were done evolving advanced hunting techniques and monogomous mating, we didn't have enough to fill our time, so we invented religion to make life harder and more interesting...

Because its what you cant do that will get you into trouble. Its easier to do evil or wrong if you will than to do good. To do good all the time without fail it takes a certain strength of character that most people don't have in abundance especially when the reward for doing so is based on faith. Everyone has doubts and its these doubts that lead us down the wrong path. Everyone fails and everyone succeeds but hardly anyone does either on a consistent basis. Sometimes the lines between right and wrong get blurred and we need someone to remind us of what is right and wrong. Peace.

When you were growing up your parents always stress doing the right thing and not get into trouble. Likewise, Christians taught to obey the commandments of the Lord. The Bible teaches us to obey the law of the land as well as the law of God.

The most critical aspect of the Christian life is obeying God. Jesus died on the cross because of His obedience.

if you look at the ten commandments, they make a lot of sense, it keeps humanity in check, what simpler reason do you need, its not telling you what you can't do, the world is a big wide open space, to make your own mistakes and learn from them, all they are saying, is if you abide by these laws, it makes for humanity to other people , regardless of faith. love thy neighbour, here speaketh a person who does,nt believe in religion, but the commandments, all people should follow

Control. The leaders have it over their congregations and the congregations try to gain it over outsiders. Not all, mind you, but it seems to be the general theme.
