Men why keep a woman for yrs without putting a special ring on her finger?

I've notice that men tell everyone that they have a special woman in their life but as the years goes by they never put a pretty ring on the woman's finger. Y is that???

Marriage is a social institution that brings a legal contract into a relationship. It means if things don't work out you have to part with your money (of course there is the pre-nup, but how many women will sign one which gives them nothing?).

Commitment is completely different. If a couple truly trust each other, the whole ceremony of marriage is unnecessary. It stresses the fact that all the romantics in Yahoo ! Answers cannot digest - we (mankind) are a species designed by nature to lead our lives alone. Commitment, trust and relationships are artificail constructs (good ones though) to keep the fabric of society going. Sometimes the true nature just tears them apart.

They can't afford it, they don't want to get married, it's convenient, there's no law that says you have to marry her...etc. And to the poster who says because they are *ssholes, that sounds like an answer from someone's perspective that wants to "be married" and not find that one person. Would you rather see men propose to women they don't want to spend their lives with? Let's see if we can get the divorce rate in the US even higher than 51%. All these posters say "because they are cheap, scared, affraid of commitment...etc". What wonderful things do they have to say about people who get divorced? They represent the majority of people who have been married in the US. You can be committed to a woman without marrying her. And apparently you can not be committed at all and be married. I can name at least 20 notable American couples that cheat on each other regularly. And saying they are cheap? I know married couples that couldn't afford a $10,000 ring, so they just passed on it all together. I would be wary of any woman who calls a man cheap if he'd rather put money down on a house of their kid's education than buying her a piece of stone to justify her.

Because some guys are afraid that they might actually have to commit to something. So they have a special lady without actually saying 'this is my wife' because that is a loaded phrase in their mind.

Lack of respect, fear of commitment, and the "do the least to make it work" mentality.
