A regular cleaning shouldnt hurt at all but a deep cleaning is a different story. A deep cleaning is probably what they did for you considering its been so long. In a deep cleaning they really get in there and go to town to get plaque out from under the edges of your gums which can be painful. I had a deep cleaning a few weeks ago and was sore for 2-3 days. Try some advil or tylenol if you feel you need it.

The best cleaning Ive experienced was when the hygenist had the lightest touch! Some hygenists think they are mining for gold and dig and dig and dig! After the 1st experience and going home with very swollen/painful and bleeding gums, I made it a point to tell the hygenist the next time that she was too rough. After all, the only way they can know that they are causing you pain is if you are wincing and/or saying "OWCH!!!"
Also, my gums tend to get a little tender from flossing. Mostly cause I dont do it very regularly. So maybe that is the reason for your pain...
DONT quit going to the dentist, please! It may suck, but this set of teeth was FREE!!

Yes that's normal. Its also normal for the gums to bleed a little. They probably did a deep cleaning to get any plaque out from in between teeth and from the gum lines.Take Alleve which is naproxen that has anti inflammatory abilities and be easy on eating hard things for the day and by tomorrow you should be fine.

Considering that you haven't had your teeth professionally cleaned in 15 years. Yes....it will hurt at first.
Just properly floss and brush your teeth everyday and visit your professional every six months. I guarantee that you wouldn't feel like you did today.
Feel better!

Yes, that's normal. It means they did a good job. It'll be ok in a day or so. Go regularly, every 6 months and maybe it won't be so bad next time. You probably had a lot of plaque build up.

Yeah, it is normal to bleed and experience pain, especially if you didn't go for 15 years.

yes, that's why most people don't like going to the dentist, it isn't exactly comfortable.
But you gotta do what you gotta do. I'll take a day of discomfort every now and then for healthy teeth.
