Give him a good brand of dog food, and add a tablespoon of oil or butter once a day. His coat should be shiny and healthy quickly, and the shedding should be nicely reduced. He will also enjoy the oils because they taste good.

If your lab is shedding excessively, it means he has a lot of dead hair needing brushed out. Get a steel comb with wide and narrow teeth, and comb him through thoroughly, make sure you take it right to his skin, without hurting him of course. If he is a black lab, you will notice the hair sticking out in clumps and it will appear brown. This just pulls away with your fingers but you won't get rid of all of it this way you have to comb him out. Also regular (ie every day) brushing with a rubber curry brush will drastically reduce shedding. Make sure you use it firmly, don't be afraid to apply some pressure, as the rubber curry brush is virtually harmless and won't hurt your dog. Case in point, half the labs that come in to us to get groomed, proceed to steal the brush and have a good old play with it, before returning it soaked in slobbers. How lovely...

Also a bath might help, this will loosen all the dead hair and make the coat more responsive to the brushing and removal of dead hair. Always towel dry the lab, hair dryers can damage the condition of the coat.

I have a lab, and the best thing you can do for him is find a groomer that offers the "Shed Less" treatment. It does just that, it makes them shed less. Tell them to do the treatment for a half hour, and the shedding will decrease.

They have special brushes you can get at pet stores, that get into the undercoat and remove the loose hair before it ends up everywhere... ask the ppl that work there, they probably know which one works best since there quite a few. Also, they have new ionizer brushes out that work really well, but are a little more expensive.

This time of year they're going to shed.

Your best bet is to brush well daily to remove lose hair. You may also way to give him a good bath to remove any dirt/grease holding the shedding hair in place.

Adding fish oil and Vitamin E help a bit, mostly with the itch, and it adds shine to the coat.
