I have been a consultant for about 5 yrs and it mostly been great, I've had a lot of fun. But lately I have been have my doubts about the company. I love the products, but the meetings and the way things are run have become to seem a bit cultish although I have been trying to cancel that thought. The first time I went to Seminar was after Mary Kay had passed away and I thought it was a bit on the idolatrous side. I have noticed that successful women in MK seem to twist religious themes around and take verses out of context to manipulate situations or unit members and team members. I am seriously thinking of becoming a personal use consultant (just buying my own things and family and friends things) at cost. Problem is I have a team member who is in qualification to be a director and our director is coming for team building this weekend. Plus MK is the only thing that has gotten me through the past months and I am staring in the face of a bankruptcy. How do I tell my director this?

We are all independent contractors, I am my own boss, but it's an emotional decision because I have invested alot of time as well as money. And the fact that my director is coming all the way from Michigan and I am in TX, well that makes me feel guilty, like I owe her something.

Stop for a second. Pray upon the answers you need. Remember, when God separates you from money, generally it's because God needs to teach you something you need to learn. Pray hard, and I guarantee that no matter what the outcome, it is in your best interests in the long term.

I saw a Mary Kay movie once that I was told was very accurate from someone with a red jacket within the Mary Kay org. I noticed the same things you did, about twisting religious themes, etc. I have a couple of friends who are "personal use consultants". They prefer that to the full time job MK can turn into. If you think that you can make it through your team members qualification and not feel two faced (I'm not calling you two-faced or even implying it) then I would support the team one last time. If on the other hand you feel strongly that supporting MK would mean taking a hit to your integrity, then I would have to request a meeting (face to face if possible) and explain to my director that I've made a decision about my MK status and while I realize that this couldn't come at a worse time, there's no way to change my mind. Be prepared to turn in any product (if you even need to), and realize that she probably won't want to take your leaving very easily. Stay firm and be prepared to walk away with your director angry at you.
If a face to face meeting is not possible, then a phone call (not a phone message) would be the next way to go.

Funny....I posted a question about MK a while back after I got sucked into a consultation. I was very creeped out by the meeting, and my question was along the lines of "is it just me or does MK smell like a cult?"

I'll post a link to my question and the answers.

Seriously, I don't think it's truly a cult or likely to become one, in the traditional sense of the word.

As for the advice I'd give you, your loyalty is first and foremost to yourself. Don't feel bad about your director coming down. Unless you begged her to come, it's her choice. There are other companies you can get into that are probably similar to MK, where your experience can be of use.

be honest and have a heart - to - heart talk with her. this way you can lay your cards on the table and go from there. be truthful as this will earn the respect of your immediate supervisor. whatever you decide to do follow your heart and instincts then live with the decision you make.

Sorry, when you said MK I thought you meant Milton Keynes. That place is a dump.
