Take your doggie to a shelter and let him pick out his own new buddy.
Lots of shelters have yards and "family rooms" where you can meet and greet potential playmates, to be sure that everyone gets along.
Shelter mutts make the best pets. They are temperment tested, inexpensive, with lots of "extras" thrown in, and you're saving a life, can't beat that.
Good Luck.

IF the breed doesn't matter, why not rescue a dog in need of a good home? Your local rescue or animal shelter would be a good place to find a potential new dog. Lots of abandoned/mistreated dogs and puppies in need of a loving home and someone to play with are waiting for you! You will also get a dog that is temperament tested, and can feel good about yourself because you know you have made a little dog very happy.
Good Luck!

I'm a sucker for mutts! Mutts generally don't have all the problems that sometimes come with purebreeds. Sometimes purebreeds can have bad health because of the breeding that has occurred to attain the breed. (If that makes sense.) For example, bull dogs, although really cool, can have big sinus problems because of the nature of the breed.
With mutts, most of the time, the bad characteristics have been breed out. And, they generally have really cool personalities.

If you have a bigger dog get a big dog and vis vera. I love golden receivers and they are good with kids and other dogs. Also if you have a little dog a Minituare Schnauzer is good cause they are very friendly dogs and great with kids too. Good Luck

Go to your local animal shelter, and I'd put money on it that you would fall in love with one of the dogs there. Go with your gut instinct, but I personally like spaniels.
