My husband hired a tree service to remove the branches from a very large tree in our yard. I forgot they were coming today but I heard people in my back yard, then I saw a woman with a rake in my driveway. They let themselves in though the gate and left it wide open as they worked. I'm lucky my two small dogs didn't get out.

I told the crew leader when I payed him that I didn't appreciate him going directly to the back yard without announcing his presence.

I would expect them to knock on the door or ring the doorbell unless they have been told prior to that they could go ahead and start. I would not appreciate it either especially if they knew someone was home.

Yes I do. Announcing yourself to the owners of the property before allowing yourself in is not only the right thing to do, it is common practice of reputable and experienced companies.
You might consider purchasing a 'Beware of Dog' sign and/or a No Trespassing sign. Display it where it can't be missed. You may need to post more than one. That way, if anything does happen because someone opened your gate, they are liable for any damage. If they happen to get bitten, they were forewarned.

I too, experienced this by a home improvement company and all three of my dogs became 'at large' because of their irresponsibility. Even after they were told to keep all doors and gates shut. I now have signs to protect them and myself. I even went to the extreme to put locks on the gates.

I think that's really up to you. See, I'm sure they didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable, they were just doing their job. Me personally, my boyfriends parents own a house and they live next door to a guy who was having work done on this tree, the man from the tree service came over and picked up after the mess, but he knocked first and told us. As long as you let them know how you feel, then they should abide by your rules, because they are working for you. I'm sure they'll talk crap about you in Spanish because they think it's silly, but you shouldn't care what they think, they are working for you, not the other way around. GOOD LUCK.......

You did the right thing. The answer is NO, nobody has the right to go into your yard or on your property without your permission. Waht is you had a killer pit-bull in the back and the dog ate of the guys leg, he would be suing you and your home owners insurance would be writing this guy a check for $500,000.00 or more!

If I were you, I would call his company and speak to the boss and let him know that you did not appreciate this guy coming into your yard without prior notification.

Yes, they most certainly should announce their presence. They are luck you did not allow the dogs out and they would have gotten bitten and it would have been their own fault or you could have gotten startled and called the police. Some people these days act as if common sense, manners and respect are non existent. God bless

Yes, they should have let you know they were there. They should have asked you to come out and showed you whatt they were going to do. That's wha the tree service I had this spring did.

yes they should let u know... my ac guy wrenched open my back gate, and i was lucky my dog wasn't back there, cause if he'd lost my dog, i'd have probably gone to jail... and he just walks in my house too without knocking, which is totally rude.

I have worked on outside work crews, and I can tell you that it is not only polite to knock and announce one self, it is also common sense.

(Up where I usually work, it is not uncommon for homeowners to take special and long range exception to trespassers)

They should indeed have let you know they were there, what if they had gotten the address wrong? would they still expect you to pay them for destroying a tree?
