It's a great caliber and platform. .22 bullets are cheap! So practice is inexpensive. A .22 does not have signifigant recoil so it is easier to practice good technique vs. firing a larger caliber that will expose you to a heavy pushing force on your shoulder. In many areas you can hunt with a .22 for small game such as rabbit or squirrel. There are many types of .22 cartridges, such as CB rounds (very low velocity and as loud as a pellet gun when shot from a rifle barrel) up to very high speed expanding bullets to snake shot (like a shotgun with many small pellets used for snakes or rats).
Shooting .22's from a rifle vs. a handgun will allow for more precise aiming and allow you to shoot at greater distances. As far as action type (the method of firing repeat shots, i.e. semi auto, lever, pump, bolt, single shot) all are good. The most accurate rifle will probably be of the bolt action or single shot variety. Although many semi auto's do well, they typically deform the soft lead bullet as they are cycled through the action. But at ranges out to 100yds on squirrel size targets the accuracy should be sufficient.
Have fun, my first gun was a .22!

I'm not going to add much but I'm bored. A.22 is a great gun not just a starter gun. I will develop a flinch (everyone does) and I go back to the 22 to work it out. I hunt small game and 22 is the only way to go. A cheap 22 is a good gun but I recommend bucking up for quality.
One other thing congratulations on being intelligent enough to start with a 22. People have asked me what should be there first gun. I always say 22. They get dissapointed and ignore my advice and end up with a gun they never shoot and can't shoot very well. Have fun and don't be afraid to get training

There are none better.
But to show the new shooter that the .22 is still an incredibly dangerous thing, take an orange or an apple and set it up on a backstop and hit it with the .22 from a little distance off. This should show the new shooter (you or anyone else) that it will do the same thing to a human brain and to be VERY VERY VERY safe.
Go with a rifle... if this is a kid don't go with a little tiny rifle, go with something that might humble them a little weighing in at atleast 5 pounds. I recommend the CZ 452 LUX, weighing in at 7 pounds and very accurate for it's affordable price of around $370.
Use the iron sights and graduate to a scope later.
It will last this person forever (if cleaned and taken care of) and will be usefull forever.

for someone that has no experiance with a gun, a twenty two is the perfect caliber. but remember it is still a gun and the lead can travel up to a mile, so shoot safely. the twenty two can help with safe gun handling and shells are cheap. a 17. however are 10 dollars for twenty five shells but at wal mart you can get a box of 550 22 bullets are only ten dollars

.22 are a good way to go, but remember a rifle must fit the person shooting it in length and weight. I have a little .22 that just tips the scales at 2.5lb and a target .22 that is all most 7lb. I would rather shot the big one but the kids at the range {young and old} go nuts over the little one.

it depends on what you are using it for. it is a great target gun. you can get a .22 pretty cheap and the ammo is really cheap. but if you are going to hunt with it a .22 is too small. if you want a decent hunting rifle for a beginer go with a 30/30 or if you want a little bigger go with a 30-06. both are affordable and the ammo is fairly cheap in comparison with other long range rifles.

How old is the person this gun is going to? I started shooting a .22 when I was about 5 years old.

Yes, I would reccomend it 2 U. The ammunition is relatively cheap(about 2 cents if you buy a Remmington Bulk Pack). This is the first gun I shot. A pellet or BB gun can be good too.

I would get a ruger 10/22. Affordable and reliable. You can probably get a used one for $150. Add another $75 or so for a scope and you've got a fun plinker that will last a lifetime.

YES! It's the best, especially if it's a rifle. It's easy to go over the safety features and when it's time to shoot there's hardly any kick back at all. And it's deadly accurate at most distances.
