i have several moles all over my body, some of which are growing, some that just all of a sudden showed up. how can i tell if they are cancerous? what are the signs they are? i learned about it in school, but i've forgotten. i have an appointment to see a dermatologist next week, but i'm still scared, especially of the spot that jsut showed up! and yes, cancer runs in both sides of my family.

Features of moles that suggest malignant behaviour -
1. color - variable color
2. size - large size
3. border - irregular border
4. discharge - persistent discharge, etc

As cancer runs in both sides of your family, you are at increased risk for cancer , but that does not mean that you have cancer.

Best course that i would suggest is to GET a DIGITAL CAMERA. Snap the different parts of the body with moles at Regular intervals. That will help you to compare which one is increasing in size and suspicious, as well as help your dermatologist to decide the progress of the moles.

DO NOT PANIC, as even if it is a cancer, it may be cured by operations, etc. The fact that you are CANCER CONSCIOUS is GOOD.

Cancer is not as common in people who are younger, so age does matter when it comes to cancer, but it's good that you have an appointment with your dermatologist. They may just be regular moles, but it could also be skin cancer since that appears to show up sometimes in ways that look like moles.

I hope your dermatologist can find the true answer for you and I hope you get better soon (if it's anything too serious)!

You've done the right thing by making an appointment with a dermatologist. When in doubt it's best to check it out .

Moles that are cancerous or precancerous have several different color variations going on at once. Check out these images and explinations.

they are not that serious, if you get them removed... they will be able to send them away to make sure they are benign... just avoid direct sunlight on moles until you have a Dr. look at them

You are right to be concerned and get this checked.
That is the best thing you can do.
Best wishes to you!
