walk humbly in heart. if you strive to be first in everything and as JOhn and James (i think it was) asked to be at His right side - you will be last, you do not ask for Graces, they are given.

It is a reference to those who feel the need to have the best of everything while here on earth and not caring who the step on to get it. He means if you have all you want and need here then you will be last in line to receive things in Heaven. And if you have spent your life living outside worldly gain and have given to those who need it more than you whether it be the last or best you have here then you will be given the greatest treasure when you get to Heaven.

Many who are considered "first" in the world....the powerful politicians, the wealthy and successful, even many of the respected religious leaders will actually be last in heaven....and many of the homeless, and despised of the world will be first in heaven. Therefore, we ought not judge by our distorted and limited worldly eyes. Rather, we ought to only abide by the word of God. For even Christ, who is perfect, was seen as anything but perfect here on earth.....For it is written of Him, "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isa 53)

That someone important, popular, rich, the most "godly", etc, on earth, will be less important in heaven than a poor person who is pure of heart and spirit.
