As an American, I would like to say thank you and God Bless to the British.

I've never heard saying the British were rubbish.
Ramsey was overall respected as a very good commander and its dead in 1944 was a great loss. With all respect, no American could even think to come close to his professional capacities in the Atlantic.
About Montgomery, the problem was more his attitude than his professionalisme. Beside the comments on Montgomery were only formulated AFTER the landing.
About your question why someone of a certain nationality was choosen ? Simply politics but Eisenhower tried always to get the best man for the job.

"If us British were suposed to be rubbish..."???

Which of the morons on this "forum" ever said that? That's exactly backwards!

The German generals debriefed after WWII stated to a man that they'd rather face the Americans any day rather than face the British at all. The reason was that the British would not back up and the Americans were committed to minimizing casualties. This resulted in the Germans losing many more troops when facing the intransigent British and having a much easier time of it when facing the Americans.

I am 57 years old, and this is the first time I ever heard that the British were supposed to be rubbish. I have read many historical accounts of World War Two, and none of them refer to the British as rubbish. I know there was a rivalry between Generals Montgomery and Patton, but the two respected each other, as I understand history.

There is nothing "rubbish" about the British. The British are d@mn fine people. Anyone who thinks otherwise is dealing with a short deck and minus a few marbles.

I would not use the Eisenhower example if I were you, there was a lot of politics involved in his choices and the positions did not necessarily go to the best commanders (of any side). But then, they did win. :-)

There was absolutely no reports from the History on WWII that the British were rubbish and Eisenhower's decisions about D-Day was strictly his and dealt entirely on military matters at the time.

The British were not rubbish.
I am not sure about the decision of who would be the Commanders being left to Ike Eisenhower. Dear old Winnie (Winston Churchill) was our leader and I understood D-Day was a joint operation with UK, USA and Canada.

Where on earth did you get that idea? Quite a few Americans are Anglophiles, so I have no clue where you heard that the Brits are "rubbish".

I love Britain - England is a lovely country, the people are fantastic, and the architecture is just astonishing.

I've never heard anyone categorize the Brits as "rubbish". The Battle of Britain is on the record as one of the most valiant defensive efforts in recorded history. Monty gets as much space as Ike in most of what I've read about WWII.
