Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express

1 Corinthians 14:2
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit....clearly we who give room for the Spirit to work in our lives yield to speaking in the language of God because there are a lot of times when we do not know what to say (pray) so the Spirit himself intercedes for us....I see no where in the bible where it says that this gift will pass away unless you are talking about where it says "tongues will cease" but it also says that Knowledge will pass away and clearly we still have knowledge!

In the first century, when Christians spoke in tongues, what they said had meaning to people who knew those languages. It was a practical means to spread the good news internationally in a short time. Today, 'speaking in tongues' usually involves an outburst of unintelligible sounds with no purpose.
The Bible also says this would cease. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10. This gift was always conveyed to persons by the laying on of hands of the apostles of Jesus or in their presence. After their death, this would have come to an end.

What made you think that speaking in tongues is not for today? The Holy Spirit is alive and still giving gifts including tongues. Jesus Christ is also alive and relevant yesterday, today and forever.

Of course tongues are for today, if you are a believer.

Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Jesus Himself said that is one of the signs of a believer.
Don't let a non-believer deceive you. You need to get everything that God has for you.
