Mentally challenged or developmentally disabled.

If you're serious, the term around here is "developmentally challenged". It covers a range of mental disabilities from mild to severe. It could mean a home, a half-way house, or just needing an instructor to teach a skill to make you a more productive member of society.

Please don't use the "r" word.

I hate it when people think that the word RETARD is derogatory, it is certainly not. The only reason why people think it is mean when friends call each other retards when they do something dumb. There is no shame in the word itself. What determines a word's offensiveness is it's context. If it is used in the right way, it should not be offensive. Society has to stop with euphemisms. We can't say handicapped...its physically challenged. Its not deaf...its hearing impaired. Its not shell shock, its post-traumatic stress disorder. These huge messes of jargon and politcal correctness are hurting my brain!

if stupid ppl hadn't used retarded so derogitively, it would still be used, because the actual meaning of the word isn't offensive. but after hearing it in that stupid voice so many times i wouldn't want to be called that either. it's really sad, because it's ppl like you luke, who end up with children who are challenged to show you some compassion. too bad it can't be you.

What works for me is calling them their name. I don't know, you might want to give it a shot. Calling a person their name, and not a label. Give it a try, you might start something.
