That is an interesting question! But it does merit some thought, does it not?

I believe that having respect for the dead, no matter how awful they were when they were alive, comes from the primitive superstitions of our distant ancestors. In ancient times, it was believed that when a person died, his spirit stayed around and he became omnipotent. Since he was omnipotent, he could hear and see everything and punish those that angered him. So people made sure to never speak ill of the dead. As time went by, the origin of the superstition lost its meaning, but the custom remained.

As for me, I would rather take my loved ones out to eat when they're alive than bring them flowers when they're dead. Death does not change how I feel about people. If I loved them in life, I will love them in death. If I hated them in life, I'll hate them long after they're dead. And I have no qualms about saying so!

no idea...i guess they respect because they don't want to hurt the grieving family by being rude...plus the dead guy can't defend himself

bit like how you would respect a guy in a wheelchair, you only respect him cuz hes helpless

good question. not sure why people do it. Doesn't make much since. you should love and respect the person when they are alive, and when you can be with them, and not when they are dead and wouldn't notice anyways.

LOL. thats a very good point. its kinda like people wanna make up for being disrespectful AFTER the person dies, by being more respectful. perhaps its to extinguish an inner guilt? who knows. nice point though
