I am a very conservative dresser. You cannot go wrong with a navy blue, gray or black suit. A brown suit, if you can find one, is more than a little frumpy. Double breasted and three-piece suits are not in fashion now. Men have been wearing vests for literally hundreds of years, I am sure the vest will make a comeback, eventually. The dress shirt is usually white. For a less formal look you can wear blue. Beige and gray dress shirts were stylish a few years ago, but I think this fad has passed. Button-down shirts are considered less formal than straight collared shirts. A man is not fully dressed without a (black leather) belt. Socks should match the trousers. Shoes should also be black leather. The most conservative look is a cap toe dress shoe. Wingtips are less formal. Square toes are in style today.

I do not know what to say about ties. Almost anything goes. A bow tie will either make you look like a college professor or an English schoolboy.

Not all that long ago, suspenders (US) or braces (UK) were fashionable, but not now. Again, men have been wearing them for centuries, it is just a matter of time until they make a comeback.

Do not be fooled into thinking that a sport coat and dress trousers are the same as a suit, it most certainly is not. Stay away from cordovan (deep red) shoes and belt, they are ridiculous.

Formal is traditionally dark over white. Accessories must match. Men should always wear the belt tightly cinched - it will make them feel more formal and less comfortable - truly.

Formal dress or business dress?
Formal, depends on the type of function.
Work dress, just dress professionally, look around you.
